European Cemeteries Route Receives the Inspiring Practice Award 2026

On 25 September 2026, the European Cemeteries Route was recognised with an Inspiring Practice Award during the closing session of the 15th Advisory Forum on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe in Yerevan, Armenia.

The EPA Governing Board recognised six outstanding initiatives across different fields of action. The European Cemeteries Route, managed by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), was awarded in the field of Cultural and Educational Exchanges for Young Europeans for the “Life Lessons — Cemeteries as Educational Heritage” practice.

The recognised practice reflects the Route’s long-standing educational work, including the ongoing Schools on Cemeteries project. In 2026, this approach continued through activities organised during the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC 2026) and the ASCE Annual Conference in Turin, presenting cemeteries as spaces for lifelong learning, youth engagement and cultural exchange.

The certificate was presented by Rui Gomes, Executive Secretary of the EPA and Director of the European Institute of Cultural Routes, to Astghik Marabyan, representing Armenia, the most recent country to join the European Cemeteries Route.

Arts and Crafts at Piratello Cemetery

On 31 October 2026, the Piratello Monumental Cemetery in Imola, Italy, will host "Arts and Crafts at Piratello Cemetery," a special guided tour held as part of the 23rd National Urban Trekking Day.

Organized by Le Guide d’Arte in collaboration with Area Blu SpA, this two-hour family-friendly walk explores the site’s artistic, historical, and industrial legacy. ASCE President at the Cultural Routes meeting in Slovenia 2026

On September 14–15, 2026, ASCE President Lidija Pliberšek attended the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe meeting on the Slovenian coast, dedicated to cooperation, sustainable tourism, and the future development of Cultural Routes.

Organized as part of the Interreg Euro-MED ECO-SEAROUTES project, the event aimed to foster sustainable tourism models and balance tourism flows across the Mediterranean. The program included a visit to the Gramona organic olive farm in Seča and discussion sessions at Palazzo Manzioli in Izola.

The meeting was moderated by Dr. Maja Turnšek from the Faculty of Tourism (University of Maribor) and joined by Rui Gomes, Executive Secretary of the EPA on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. The gathering took place alongside the 11th Mediterranean Coast and Macro-Regional Strategies Week, highlighting the vital role of Cultural Routes in European cooperation.

Representing the European Cemeteries Route, Mrs. Pliberšek exchanged experiences with other route members in Slovenia to strengthen partnerships and advance sustainable tourism and European cultural heritage.

European Cemeteries Route Receives ECTN Award for Sustainable Cultural Tourism

On 24 September 2026, the European Cemeteries Route received first place at the ECTN Awards for its initiative Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe. ECTN Award for the European Cemeteries Route

On Thursday, 24 September 2026, the 19th ECTN Conference took place in Skiathos, Greece. During the event, the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN) presented the 13th edition of the "Destination for Sustainable Cultural Tourism 2026" awards. First place in the "Transnational Thematic Products" category was awarded to the European Cemeteries Route, managed by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), for its initiative "Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe".

This award represents significant European recognition of ASCE's long-standing efforts to highlight cemeteries as a vital part of European cultural heritage and as spaces with immense potential for cultural and sustainable tourism.

About the Significant Cemeteries for a Sustainable Europe Initiative

The recognition is also of special significance for Maribor (Slovenia)—the city currently hosting the ASCE Presidency—where the initiative "Significant Cemeteries for a Sustainable Europe" began developing in 2023. ASCE President Lidija Pliberšek, M.Sc., also serves as the director of the ASCE member company Pogrebno podjetje Maribor (part of the JHMB Group).

A key foundation of the initiative is the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. Through its activities, ASCE connects the cultural heritage of cemeteries with issues of sustainability, peace, inclusive communities, environmental protection, and a responsible approach to spatial management.

Connecting Cultural Heritage Across Borders

"If we want to discover the true story of a city, we should visit its cemetery. That is where the stories of its people, architecture, art, and identity through time are revealed," emphasized ASCE President Lidija Pliberšek, M.Sc., upon receiving the award.

The European Cemeteries Route connects this extraordinary cultural heritage across European borders to preserve it, present it to the broader public, and integrate it into cultural tourism. This award further confirms the important role cemeteries can play in sustainability and responsible tourism.

"I am particularly pleased that this broader role of cemeteries has been recognized. As President of ASCE, I proudly accepted the award on behalf of our members across 169 European cities and 28 European countries," added Pliberšek.

As she customarily does during international appearances, she concluded her address in Slovenian with the words "Hvala lepa in nasvidenje" (Thank you very much and goodbye), bringing a distinct Slovenian touch to the international stage.

Free guided tours at the New Cemetery of Belgrade 2026

This autumn, visitors can explore the cultural and historical heritage of the New Cemetery of Belgrade through four free guided tours. Programme of the Autumn Guided Tours

On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the New Cemetery of Belgrade and the 25th anniversary of ASCE, JKP “Pogrebne usluge” Beograd is organising a series of free guided tours at the New Cemetery of Belgrade between September and November 2026.

The programme began on 20 September with “Great Loves of Serbian Greats”, focusing on the love stories, relationships and personal lives of notable Serbian figures. Further tours will take place on 4 October, dedicated to twentieth-century writers and poets; on 18 October, exploring the lives of prominent Serbian theatre and film actors; and on 1 November, focusing on distinguished military leaders and heroes of the First World War buried at the New Cemetery.

All tours are free of charge and no reservation is required.

In celebration of the 225th anniversary of Rasos Cemetery, the Vilnius City Museum invites visitors to a special exhibition titled “Rasos: A Living Cemetery”.

Curated by Vida Girininkienė, Eglė Bazaraitė, and Rasa Antanavičiūtė, this unique project showcases the site’s history from its origins through WWII, highlighting its gravestone symbolism, prominent historical figures, and thriving natural ecosystem.

Music and Reflection at Piratello Cemetery

On 13 September 2026 at 6:30 PM, the Piratello Monumental Cemetery in Imola, Italy, will host Fugace, an evening combining a silent walk through the cemetery with a classical music performance.

The event will begin with a quiet exploration of the cemetery’s tombs, statues, chapels, and gravestones, followed by a solo double bass performance by Roberto Bartoli, one of Italy’s most distinctive double bass players.

Fugace is part of the Naturalmente Imola 2026 programme, which this year is dedicated to the theme “The Essential Made Visible to the Eye,” celebrating the importance of the city’s green spaces and their role in our well-being and appreciation of beauty.

Poetry and music at Mühlau Cemetery 2026

On 25 July 2026, a special event titled “The Moment of Eternity” took place at Mühlau Cemetery in Innsbruck, Austria.

The programme offered a varied combination of artistic performances, including lyrical and poetic texts, rhythmic percussion and mime. As part of the afternoon, participants also visited the grave of Georg Trakl, one of Austria’s best-known Expressionist poets.

Set in the peaceful surroundings of the cemetery, the event provided an opportunity to experience the cemetery as a place not only of remembrance, but also of culture, artistic expression and reflection.

Case study of the National Pedagogy of Memory Programme at the Fiumei Road Cemetery and the National Park of Mourning in Budapest, Hungary. 1. Introduction & The Core Mission

The National Pedagogy of Memory Programme is a comprehensive, nation-level educational initiative in Hungary operating at the intersection of experiential learning, history education, and cultural identity. Implemented through a strategic partnership between the National Heritage Institute (NÖRI) and the Klebelsberg Centre, the programme spans 53 national and historical memorials.

The programme directly challenges the common public perception of cemeteries as static spaces of mourning. Instead, it reframes them as dynamic "open classrooms" and cultural landscapes where history comes alive through individual human stories.

To ensure high-quality educational impact, the programme utilises a rigorous three-level pedagogical structure:

With NEPHESH | Protecting the Shadow, Teatro delle Albe transforms these historic spaces into open-air forums for reflection. Directed by Alessandro Renda, this site-specific experience takes its name from the Hebrew word nephesh, meaning "soul," "life," or "living being," and invites visitors to explore themes of memory, grief, and the fragility of life.

Neither a conventional play nor a typical guided tour, NEPHESH invites small groups on a deeply personal, headphone-guided journey. As participants walk past grand monuments and hidden graves, a layered audio dramaturgy unfolds, blending philosophy, personal narratives, and cross-cultural perspectives on mortality. The result is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on what it means to remember and to be remembered.

Silent Disco at Vienna Central Cemetery: Event Highlights

On 17 April 2026, Vienna Central Cemetery hosted its first silent disco, transforming the cemetery church into an unexpected cultural space where silence and music coexisted.

Around 500 guests of all ages joined the event, dancing side by side with headphones and creating a collective atmosphere without any amplified sound. Despite the silence, the space felt vibrant and alive, shaped entirely by individual rhythm and presence.

The event offered a new perspective on a place usually associated with reflection and farewell, highlighting its potential as a setting for cultural and social encounters. It forms part of Friedhöfe Wien’s broader efforts to open the cemetery for art, culture, and community-oriented initiatives, gradually redefining how such spaces can be experienced by the public.

Video of Europe’s Cultural Routes in Italy

The Italian Ministry of Culture has unveiled a new one-hour video dedicated to the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe that run across Italy.

Bringing together all 36 certified routes present in the country, the video offers a broad perspective on how these itineraries connect places, stories, and communities across Europe. This approach highlights the idea of a shared European heritage, while also emphasizing the role of these routes in promoting sustainable tourism and cooperation between regions.

One of the featured routes is the European Cemeteries Route, coordinated by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), which connects historic cemeteries as spaces of memory, art, and identity. In the video, the route is represented through several significant Italian cemeteries, including the Monumental Cemetery of Lavagna, the Monumental Cemetery of Mantua, the Certosa Monumental Cemetery in Bologna, the Monumental Cemetery of Verona, the Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome, and the Verano Monumental Cemetery in Rome.

Theatrical performance at Certosa Monumental Cemetery

In July and August 2025, the Certosa Monumental Cemetery in Bologna turned into a stage for "Pen, Bread and Justice", a theatrical play celebrating equality, solidarity, and civic responsibility.

Directed by Giovanna Manfredini and produced by Associazione Rimacheride, the performance told the stories of three Bolognese figures who shaped society: a trailblazing advocate for women’s rights, a socialist mayor emphasizing community and daily labor, and a WWII activist who saved countless lives through courage and solidarity.

Part of the Certosa 2025 Summer Calendar and the ASCE "Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe" initiative, the show aligns with the Goal 16 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Guided walk "The Piratello in the Feminine"

On 31 October and 1 November 2025, visitors in Imola, Italy, are invited to join a special guided walk through the historic Piratello Cemetery.

The tour "The Piratello in the Feminine: Noble Benefactors, Devout Women, Partisans, and Scientists" focuses on remarkable women from different periods who shaped the city’s cultural, scientific, and social heritage.

Throughout the route, participants will learn about noble benefactors, influential activists, creative minds, and everyday women whose courage left a lasting impact. Among the figures featured are pioneering scientists, writers who challenged convention, and women who helped protect others during times of conflict. The artistic monuments at Piratello Cemetery, many highlighting female symbolism, form part of the experience.

The walk begins near the Area Blu S.p.A. offices (Via Emilia Ponente 24) and covers about two kilometers over roughly two hours. Advance registration is required.

On November 8, 2025, Kalavryta Cemetery will host a commemorative tree-planting event honoring those who lost their lives during World War II.

Event details

Organized by the Kalavryta Holocaust Victims Association with the support of the local municipality, this event is part of the Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe initiative by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE). In 2025, the initiative commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II under the theme Gardens of 80.

The program will begin with a memorial service at the Chapel of All Saints at 10:00, followed by the planting of 80 cypress trees at 10:30. These trees symbolize remembrance, resilience, and the community’s ongoing commitment to peace and justice.

Kalavryta Cemetery holds profound historical significance, marking the graves of hundreds of victims of the 1943 German occupation, alongside those who later helped rebuild the town. The event welcomes both descendants and the wider public to honor this history through their participation.

From 18 to 26 October 2025, Lisbon and its surrounding areas will host the 4th Cultural Week in Cemeteries, celebrating Portugal’s rich cemetery heritage.

During the 4th Cultural Week in Cemeteries, visitors can enjoy guided tours, night visits, themed walks, educational workshops, and "open mausolea afternoons" across Lisbon's cemeteries, such as Prazeres, Alto de São João, Olivais, Carnide, and Lumiar. Beyond Lisbon, the event includes sites in Porto, Aveiro, and several other Portuguese cities, showcasing the country’s rich funerary heritage.

One of the highlights is the 1st Interdisciplinary Conference on Cemeteries, taking place on 24 October 2025.

In Turin, Italy, the video project Severed has been unveiled as part of the 2025 Week of Discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC). Created to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the production blends music and acting to highlight the human cost of conflict and the urgent call for peace.

The project is a collaboration between the Associazione Nazionale Vittime Civili di Guerra di Torino, Piemonte e Valle d'Aosta, AFC Torino S.p.A., Liceo Coreutico Teatrale Germana Erba, and the Fondazione Germana Erba's Friends. With young performers at its heart, Severed connects memory with a vision for a peaceful future.

Pogrebno podjetje Maribor, presiding member of ASCE, has prepared a special photo exhibition at Pobrežje Cemetery in Maribor, Slovenia.

Titled "Significant cemeteries for sustainable Europe", the exhibition showcases how ASCE members are developing and implementing sustainable practices as part of the "Significant cemeteries for sustainable Europe" initiative, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The exhibition invites visitors to view cemeteries not only as spaces of remembrance but also as active contributors to sustainability. It is on display from September 2025, in front of the chapel at Pobrežje Cemetery.

The first event, "Brown’s Hotel and Luxury Living Stories at Kensal Green Cemetery", takes place on Saturday, 21st June 2025. The day begins with welcome drinks at the Dissenters Chapel, followed by an engaging talk by Andy Williamson about the fascinating and secretive history of Brown’s Hotel, one of London’s oldest luxury hotels. After a buffet lunch, participants will enjoy a guided tour uncovering the lives of hoteliers and notable figures from London’s high society who now rest at Kensal Green.

9th August 2025: Guided tour

The second event, "Joseph Locke and Others – A Tour of Kensal Green Cemetery", will be held on Saturday, 9th August 2025. This guided tour marks the 220th anniversary of renowned railway engineer Joseph Locke’s birth. It highlights the lives and legacies of key figures from Britain’s railway history who are buried within the cemetery grounds.

This year’s Madrid Book Fair, running from 1 to 15 June 2025 in Madrid’s historic Retiro Park, offered visitors more than just literary discoveries. A special outdoor photo exhibition along the Paseo de Coches highlighted the European Cultural Routes — a program celebrating the continent’s shared heritage.

Among the featured routes was the European Cemeteries Route, represented by the striking image of The Kiss of Death, a renowned funerary sculpture from Barcelona’s Poblenou Cemetery.

It aligns with Goal 16 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions—and forms part of the broader ASCE initiative "Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe".

International Conference on Cultural Routes in Nova Gorica

From April 14 to 16, 2025, ASCE President Mrs. Lidija Pliberšek participated in the International Conference "Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe: Recognition and Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Cross-Border Regions".

The event, held across the border towns of Gorizia, Nova Gorica, and Tolmin, brought together cultural heritage professionals, Council of Europe representatives, and ECoC partners to discuss the importance of cross-border cooperation in preserving shared cultural heritage.

During the conference, Mrs. Pliberšek highlighted the European Cemeteries Route, a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, emphasizing cemeteries as spaces rich in historical, cultural, and social significance. Guided tour “In the Embrace of Silence”

On November 7, 2024, the Dubovac Catholic Cemetery hosted a guided tour titled "In the Embrace of Silence", part of the Karlovac Fog Festival.

About the event

From November 4 to 10, 2024, Karlovac hosted its annual Fog Festival, a unique event celebrating the city’s natural foggy charm while promoting its cultural and historical heritage. Among the highlights was "In the Embrace of Silence", a dusk guided tour through the Catholic Cemetery Dubovac, offering a rare nighttime experience in one of Croatia's most atmospheric locations.

Organized by the Katzler Pavilion, in collaboration with the Karlovac Tourist Board and the Karlovac County Tourist Guides Association "Bastion", with the support of the Karlovac company "Zelenilo", the walk featured visits to historical landmarks like the All Saints Chapel and Vranyczany-Dobrinović Mausoleum. The fog and darkness created a mystical ambiance, sharpening participants’ senses and immersing them in stories of the past.

In Slovenia, drought-resistant plants were introduced, while Italy’s SEFIT produced a booklet on sustainability practices in Italian cemeteries. Vienna hosted seasonal workshops on eco-friendly practices, and Oslo’s Eastern Cemetery launched water-saving and rainwater-collecting gravestone projects. Barcelona’s Montjuïc Cemetery organized an educational exhibit on environmental mitigation strategies, and Berlin, Rijeka, and Karlovac hosted sustainability-focused tours and programs.

Future plans

In 2025, the ASCE initiative, "Significant Cemeteries for Sustainable Europe," will continue striving to reach more cemetery visitors and spread the key messages from the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

European Cemeteries Route receives Best Practice Award 2024

At the 13th Annual Advisory Forum of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, held in Budapest, Hungary, from September 25 to 27, 2024, the European Cemeteries Route received the Best Practice Award 2024.

This award was given for the project titled "Week of Discovering European Cemeteries: Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change" that aimed to highlight cemeteries as green spaces and foster sustainable practices.

It involved over 30 events across 22 cemeteries in seven European countries. Members of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) and the European Cemeteries Route organized guided tours, exhibitions, and workshops, all focusing on sustainable development.

Lisbon's 3rd Cultural Week in Cemeteries

From October 5 to 13, 2024, the 3rd Cultural Week in Cemeteries will take place in and around Lisbon, celebrating Portugal's cemetery heritage.

Event program

This year’s program includes new guided tours at various Lisbon cemeteries, the Museum of Lisbon, and the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora. In honor of the Proclamation of the Portuguese Republic Day on October 5, the Municipal Newspaper Archive will lead a tour about Portugal's First Republic and notable Republicans buried at the Alto de São João Cemetery.

The British and German cemeteries will also participate, offering guided and self-guided tours. In collaboration with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, an "Open Day" will be organized at the Prazeres Cemetery, allowing access to the interiors of mausoleums, which will showcase stained glass, altars, and intricately carved coffins. A concert-guided tour featuring 19th-century music will be held at the Palmela Mausoleum, considered to be Europe's largest private mausoleum.

Additionally, there will be a Philosophy for Children workshop and a Death Cafe for open discussions about death. Municipalities like Loures, Palmela, Setúbal, and Vila Franca de Xira will also participate, offering guided tours, musical performances, and virtual talks.

The Pedagogical Suitcase project at Barcelona cemeteries

The Pedagogical Suitcase project brings funeral culture into schools to address bereavement, explore funerary heritage, and develop emotional management and respect for traditions.

Cementiris de Barcelona is an active participant in the Schools on Cemeteries project and a member of Barcelona City Council's Pedagogical Innovation Council. In 2024, they expanded their educational services by introducing the Pedagogical Suitcase project, which brings funeral culture into schools to address bereavement among younger students.

The project is part of their ongoing involvement in educational initiatives that explore the city's funerary heritage and historical evolution. Since 2013, they’ve offered activities adapted to the school curriculum, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, new activities were created, allowing young people to express the concept of death from an artistic and creative perspective through the study and research of cemeteries.

The program also includes visits to significant historical sites like the Poblenou and Montjuïc cemeteries, highlighting Barcelona's history, cultural heritage, and societal shifts around death. It features the Collection of Hearses and El Fossar de la Pedrera, educating students on funeral rituals and gender roles. Explore the wide range of fun and educational activities for children happening at the Vienna Central Cemetery throughout 2024.

150 Years of Vienna Central Cemetery

In 2024, the Vienna Central Cemetery marks its 150th anniversary. To celebrate this important occasion, a year-long program of special events has been organized, with a particular focus on the WDEC 2024 theme: Environmental sustainability and climate change.

Since the cemetery is also an active participant in the Schools on Cemeteries project, many events are specifically designed for students and children of all ages.

Open Beehive Day

What’s buzzing at the cemetery? The Vienna Central Cemetery’s bees are busy as ever in their springtime splendor.

Kids will learn about the critical role bees play in the environment and plant pollination, their life cycle, and the art of beekeeping. They’ll also discover bee products like beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly.

Children can enjoy craft stations, and there will be small snacks and drinks available.

Art Adventure Workshops

In this creative workshop, participants will paint with acrylics and glow-in-the-dark paints on canvas.

Amid the inspiring atmosphere of Vienna’s Central Cemetery, children will create a unique artwork that will serve as a memorable reminder of the workshop for weeks to come.

Urban Gardening Workshops

Learn the fundamentals of organic gardening, including watering, mulching, hoeing, fertilizing, and weeding. Participants will conduct simple tests to determine soil types and understand how to plan a gardening season. The workshop also covers the use of home remedies in the garden and offers tips on identifying beneficial insects and pests.

There will be a joint question-and-answer session to conclude.

The Sound of Birds

The Vienna Central Cemetery is home to an impressive variety of birds. Visitors may encounter blackbirds, owls, swifts, marsh harriers, and on occasion, the rare hoopoe with its striking crest, depending on the season and weather.

Bring your binoculars or simply listen carefully to discover the vibrant bird life that calls the cemetery home.

Nature Exploration for Kids

The natural garden within the Vienna Central Cemetery is a magical place. Its wild meadows provide a safe haven for various animals, and children may spot deer, field hamsters, hedgehogs, pheasants, butterflies, and hear the sounds of birds and other creatures.

This nature haven also offers a chance to explore wild herbs, bushes, and trees through hands-on discovery. Kids will learn how plants can be used for food, medicine, fragrances, or even clothing.

The tour will wrap up with a relaxing herbal picnic.

The T900 project at the Certosa Monumental Cemetery

The purpose of the "T900" project is to preserve important tombs from the 20th century in the monumental cemetery of Bologna, while creating a bridge between generations.

The Associazione Amici della Certosa di Bologna has launched the "T900" project to preserve and celebrate significant 20th-century tombs, bridging past, present, and future. Coordinated by architect Francisco Pérez Amitrano, the project involves local students, association members, and Bologna citizens in documenting and promoting these funerary monuments.

It features student-created graphics and renderings, alongside archival research and high-quality photography. This initiative, presented during the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries, aims to build a community archive and instil a sense of historical memory in young people. The project aligns with broader educational efforts on cemetery heritage through the Schools on Cemeteries project.

WorldSkills 2024: An overview

WorldSkills is a global competition that showcases the talents of young professionals in various trades and vocational fields. This prestigious event emphasizes the importance of technical skills and education by uniting participants from different countries. The 2024 edition will take place in Lyon from 10 to 15 September, 2024, featuring a wide array of competitions, workshops, and exhibitions designed to promote excellence in vocational and trade professions.

Workshops at the New Guillotière Cemetery

On 13 and 14 September, 2024, as part of WorldSkills and the company open days, the Lyon municipality, a member of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), will organize two workshops at the New Guillotière Cemetery.

The first workshop invites participants to explore the cemetery’s historical and natural significance. By using the ARtour mobile app, attendees will walk along the peaceful paths, discovering notable graves, efforts toward environmental restoration, and traces of the city’s past.

In the second workshop, participants will dive into the administrative aspects of cemetery management. This behind-the-scenes look offers a rare opportunity to understand the professions and services that contribute to cemetery operations, often unnoticed by the public.

About the Conference

The European Institute of Cultural Routes (EICR - Technical agency of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme) and the Compostela Group of Universities (member of the University Network for Cultural Studies) is pleased to announce the organisation of the 1st International Conference on Universities and Cultural Routes, taking place from 13th to 14th November 2024 at the University of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Following two successful editions of the Cultural Routes Academic Workshops held online in 2021 and 2023, this event is intended to highlight existing research and academic activities in the field of Cultural Routes.

Call for papers

The academic conference welcomes papers relating to all aspects of Cultural Routes. Participants interested in presenting a contribution at the conference can submit their abstracts to evaluation@culture-routes.lu under the subject “Call for abstracts 2024_Cultural Routes” by Friday 27th September.

As the European Cemeteries Route has been a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe since 2010, the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) would like to encourage our representatives to attend the conference with some interesting presentation topics.

Importnat information

The travel to/from Santiago de Compostela and accommodation costs are not covered by the organisers and must be borne by each participant. Registration fees will not be requested, and meals and extra activities will be offered by the organisers as indicated in the draft programme.

The Epitaaf association, member of ASCE, invites you to see a unique art installation at the Laeken Cemetery in Brussels, Belgium.

150 years of the Atelier Salu

This year marks a significant milestone for the Atelier Ernest Salu, as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. To honor this occasion, students from Sint-Lukas Kunsthumaniora have crafted a remarkable tribute to these renowned funerary sculptors.

Nestled among the many Salu graves at the Laeken Cemetery, within the choir of the old church, visitors can now admire a unique installation. This display, inspired by a historical photograph from the Epitaaf archive, showcases the original site of the entrance to the grave galleries, which was later transformed into the Emile Bockstael grave chapel. The installation is adorned with historical funerary objects and sculpting materials, providing a rich visual narrative of the studio’s storied past.

The exhibition is open for visitors every day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM until 31 August 2024.
