About the Carlos V European Award

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation established the “Carlos V European Award” in order to reward the work of people, organizations, projects, or initiatives that have contributed to the general knowledge and the enhancement of Europe’s cultural, social, scientific, and historical values, as well as to the process of European construction and integration.

Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe

This year was the first time that this prize was not granted to a person, but to an European programme. Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme received the award because it puts into practice the European values, such as human rights, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, and promotes diverse heritage by uniting people and places in networks of shared history and heritage.

The European Cemeteries Route members are happy and proud to be part of this amazing, award winning programme!

The ceremony

The award will be officially handed over to the Council of Europe by Felipe VI, the king of Spain, in a ceremony that will take place on May 9, 2019 (Europe Day), in the church of the Royal Monastery of Yuste, Spain.
