From 10 to 18 October 2026, Portugal will host the 5th Cultural Week in Cemeteries, featuring a varied programme of guided tours, thematic walks, exhibitions, workshops and other cultural activities exploring the country’s funerary heritage.
The programme includes several cemeteries that are members of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), including Prazeres Cemetery and Alto de São João Cemetery in Lisbon, as well as Lapa Cemetery in Porto. Activities will also take place in other Portuguese cities, with a collaboration with the Goethe-Institut’s Falar sobre a morte (nunca matou ninguém) festival.
A key event will be the 2nd Interdisciplinary Conference on Cemeteries, held on 16 October at Biblioteca Orlando Ribeiro in Lisbon. It will bring together researchers, specialists and members of the public for a day of discussion and knowledge-sharing.
All activities are free of charge, but prior registration is required at cemiterios.visitas@cm-lisboa.pt.
