Ragnar Östberg (1866-1945)

Ragnar Östberg known as the leading architect behind Stockholm City Hall, Stockholm’s most notable architectural project of the 20th century. In 1903, Östberg started planning Stockholm City Hall, the main part of the building is constructed from handmade red bricks that took all of 15 years to finally complete. Greatly influenced from the Italian Renaissance, the hall has two piazzas – the main courtyard and the Blue Hall. The Blue Hall is internationally renowned for hosting the annual Nobel Prize Ceremony banquet dinner.
Östberg passed away at the age of 79 on February 5th 1945. His gravestone is made of white marble and was unveiled on November 3rd, 1953 on the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of Stockholm City Hall.
