The Türk grave

The most prominent buildings and graves

The monumental neo-Gothic building was design for the landowner and merchant Franjo Ksaver Turk (St. Gothard 1800 -1889) and his wife Katarin, nee Jakšić, in 1892 by the German architect Kuno Waidmann (Tigerfeld, 1845-Graz, 1921), who created an important and influential oeuvre of revival-style buildings in Croatia. According to the characteristics of the architectural design, which show some compatibility with Bolle`s produuctions , it is possible that Herman Bolle (Cologne, 1845 - Zagreb, 1926), one of the most important and best know of architects in Croatia, also took part in the design work. Dr Dragan Damjanović places the mausoleum among the most succseful sepulchral buildings put up in Croatia at the end of the 19th century. It has a square ground plan, surmounted with a broken roof with gables on allfour sides, with an elongated tower with lantern. The interior space is decorated with a wall painting rich in colour, and the inscribed slabs in the walls give the names of Franjo Ksaver Turk, Katarina Turk, Franjo Ksaver Turk and Franjo Aurel Turk, all of whom are laid to rest in the mausoleum. In the exterior design, a number of characteristic neo-Ghotic elements are used, including finials, blind arcades, gargoyles, mullioned windows and buttresses, The carved portal with a pointed lunette filled with the family coat of arms in high relief is borne on columns of red marble which are in addition to the stained glass, the only colour accentuation.
